So far we have seen the first two parts of Vicky Papageorgiou’s mini course. Now she is sharing with us her 3rd and 4th lesson plans for the Visual Arts Circle. These two are the final lesson plans which complete the mini course. Social Inequalities is a mini course teaching students how to prepare oral presentations using contemporary artists and transformative learning as an incentive. The target group is syoung adults (over 16 years old) and the level is B2+ .

We are delighted to announce that the programme for the Visual Arts Creation in Language Education (VACLE) Conference in Valletta, Malta on 15th and 16th February 2019 is now open. Speakers include leading experts in the use of the visual arts in language education such as Magdalena Brzezinska, Joanna Norton, Jelena Bobkina, Elena Dominguez, Hania Bociek, Alan Marsh, Nayir Ibrahim and Kieran Donaghy.
The VACLE Conference which is being co-organised by the ELT Council and the Visual Arts Circle is an innovative event that explores the possibilities that creation of the visual arts (drawing, painting, design, crafts, photography, film-making, video-making, computer art and gaming) offers to both language teachers and language learners. The VACLE Conference seeks to bring together leading experts and practitioners in visual arts creation in language learning that share their experiences, insights and know-how, and provide participants with a unique opportunity to enhance their competence in teaching visual arts creation in the language classroom.

After her Graffiti Debate lesson plan series, Vicky Papageorgiou is sharing with us her second lesson plan series for the Visual Arts Circle. Social Inequalities is a mini course teaching students how to prepare oral presentations using contemporary artists as an incentive. The target group is students over 16 years old and the level is B2+ . In total it lasts about 8-9 teaching hours. This is why the whole series will be posted in 3 parts (First : lesson plan 1, Second : lesson plan 2 and Third : lesson plan 3 & 4 together).
Part of this course has been based on specific transformative methods by Kokkos and by Perkins, employing critical thinking techniques and reflective methods to motivate learners to consider and reconsider their views on modern social matters and hopefully to lead them to change through art. All the artworks used have been carefully selected among works by contemporary artists from a variety of countries who use a variety of artistic media to address and comment on these inequalities through their work and who have also tried to make these problems more relatable to the public.

Proverbs are an important part of peoples’ different cultural capital filtering it into common sense truth. This lesson plan by Irene Vlazaki combines a variety of learning strategies using proverbs in the background. Learners will express themselves linguistically and artistically in a process of understanding how values can connect us.
Irene Vlazaki has been a teacher of English in Greece for 25 years currently working in a state primary school in Thessaloniki. Before settling in Primary classrooms she has had a significant amount of experience in all grades and levels of ELT. She is currently an MA student in intercultural studies and Pedagogy in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and strongly believes in the mediating power of English Language and the bridging of cultures it can initiate. Being a project coordinator in two Erasmus programs made it possible to see how problems can be solved through interaction and respect. ELT can be used in the most unconventional ways if students enjoy and learn and State schools are still in Greece a wonderful place for experimentation and creativity despite the many difficulties and lack of recourses.

The Image Conference is the annual conference of the Visual Arts Circle, and this year it is being hosted and co-organised by New York College, Athens with the collaboration of the Global Issues SIG of IATEFL. Leading experts and practitioners in the use of images in language learning will share their experiences, insights and know-how and provide participants with an excellent opportunity to enhance their competence in the innovative, critical and creative use of images in language education.

On April 27, the Visual Arts Circle went live on the 10th Virtual Round Table. Among the people who participated were Kieran Donaghy, Rob Howard, Magdalena Brzezinska, Magdalena Wasilewska and Valeria Benevolo Franca.
In her talk, Magdalena shared with the participants her love for street art, and she offered some specific tips on how such art can be successfully used in an EFL class to improve students’ knowledge and skills and to inspire learners to create.
The activities presented varied from simple pen-and-paper ones to high-tech online ones. Discussion incorporating certain MoMA’s art and inquiry techniques was introduced. Some other activities included :
street-art-inspired creation of headline poetry, stencils, or students’ own graffiti;
designing a social campaign; and creating a virtual interactive walk.
There followed a sub-section devoted specifically to Banksy’s peace art and Banksy-inspired stickers and tattoos, where such techniques as impersonation, focus on the senses, and designing one’s own peace sign/symbol were examined.
